THE LAST TIME
A.J. Brown scored three touchdowns, all in the first half, as the Eagles raced away to an early lead and never looked back for a 35-13 win in Philadelphia on Oct. 30, 2022.
Brown finished the game with six catches for 156 yards and the three scores. Brown was Philly quarterback Jalen Hurts’ favored target, but he found lots of success wherever he threw the ball. Dallas Goedert had six catches and DeVonta Smith had four. Zach Pascal had just two, but they went for 57 yards. Hurts completed 19 of 28 for 285 yards and four touchdowns, as the Pittsburgh secondary was shredded.
The Steelers offense continued its season-long struggles. The Steelers got a first-quarter touchdown on a fourth-down trick play, with wide receiver Chase Claypool throwing to fullback Derek Watt. The rest of the offensive output consisted of two Nick Sciba field goals. The rookie was called into service because Chris Boswell missed the game with a groin injury.
Kenny Pickett finished 25 of 38 for 191, and turned the ball over twice, with one interception and one fumble. Pickett was sacked six times and hit 11 times, as the Pittsburgh offensive line had a long day against a talented Philadelphia front.
STEELERS-EAGLES SERIES
The Steelers have not won in Philadelphia since 1965, going 0-10 in that span. The Steelers have been out-scored 84-22 in their last three meetings in the City of Brotherly Love. The losses at Lincoln Financial Field in 2008, 2016 and 2022 were all bloodbaths.
The Steelers lost to the Eagles at Veterans Stadium in 1997, 1991 and 1979. Their last win in Philadelphia occurred on Oct. 24, 1965. It was a 20-14 win for Pittsburgh at Franklin Field.
While the Steelers have struggled in Philly, the Eagles haven’t done much better in Pittsburgh. The Steelers have won six of their last eight against the Eagles at home. The overall series stands at 49-29-3 in Philly’s favor.
PITTSBURGH CONNECTIONS
The franchise that is now the Pittsburgh Steelers was originally the Philadelphia Eagles and vice versa. Steelers owner Art Rooney Sr. sold the team he founded in 1933 to New York businessman Alexis Thompson. Thompson planned to move the team to New York, but when that move was blocked, he was left scrambling for a home.
Meanwhile, Rooney was having second thoughts about having sold the team. So Rooney bought the Philadelphia franchise, moving it to Pittsburgh and allowing Thompson to move the Steelers to Philadelphia to be closer to his base of operations in New York.
The new franchises took up the names, record books and even most of the players of the old franchises, thanks to a series of trades called the Pennsylvania Polka. Since the moves happened within the span of one offseason, the NFL considers the history of the franchises unbroken, though technically, the are the opposite teams of the ones founded in 1933.
Another forgotten piece of history might be when the heat of World War II united the franchises to form the one-year “Steagles.”
With the rise of global conflicts, the NFL was faced with a shortage of players. The Cleveland Rams in 1943 were granted permission to suspend operations. The Steelers and Eagles became faced with rosters unfit for competition.
While the official name for the one-season merger is officially listed as “Phil-Pitt Combine” in the NFL record books, the name “Steagles” became a coined name used to this day. It is one of two instances where the Steelers merged with a franchise temporarily.
Led by quarterback Roy Zimmerman and right halfback Jack Hinkle, Phil-Pitt started the season 3-2, but finished 5-4-1. The Eagles resumed normal operations in 1944, while the Steelers merged with the Chicago Cardinals. The “Carpets” were less successful than the Steagles, finishing 0-10.
Eagles senior director of scouting Brandon Hunt in a Pine-Richland and IUP alum that 16 seasons over two stints with the Steelers.
Hunt was a front office intern when the Steelers won Super Bowl XL in 2005. He left for the Houston Texans in 2007 to become a pro scout, but then returned as pro scouting coordinator, a role he held until he left the team in 2022. Hunt had been a candidate for the team’s vacant general manager position that instead went to Omar Khan.
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni coached wide receivers at IUP from 2006-08. His brother, Mike, has been the head coach at Washington & Jefferson since 2003.
Backup quarterback Kenny Pickett is a Pitt alum and was the first-round pick of the Steelers in the 2022 NFL Draft. Pickett played two seasons in Pittsburgh as the primary starter, before losing his job to Mason Rudolph after an ankle injury down the stretch run last season and requesting a trade after the Steelers signed Russell Wilson this offseason.
Nickel cornerback Avonte Maddox and practice squad cornerback A.J. Woods also attended Pitt. Running back Saquon Barkley, wide receiver Jahan Dotson and practice squad cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields are Penn State alumni.
Punter Braden Mann spent the 2023 offseason with the Steelers before being released and landing in Philadelphia.
