Steelers Waive Promising Wide Receiver after Injury
The Pittsburgh Steelers waived wide receiver Tarik Black with an injury designation after a hamstring injury earlier this week.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have waived wide receiver Tarik Black with an injury designation, the team announced on Tuesday.
Black suffered a hamstring injury during the team’s practice session on Sunday and missed Monday’s practice session. He had been playing well since being signed in the middle of training camp.
Black, 26, is in his fourth professional season. An undrafted free gent out of Texas for the Indianapolis Colts in 2021, he spent two seasons with the New York Jets, playing one game for the team in 2021. Black was most recently with the Baltimore Ravens practice squad last season, but was released in January.
Black was not extremely productive in college. His best season came in 2019 at Michigan, when he caught 25 passes for 323 yards and one touchdown. A transfer to Texas for his senior year did not result in an increased workload, catching 10 passes for 240 yards over eight games for the Longhorns before entering the NFL.
With the release of Black and the expected signing of wide receiver/kick returner T.J. Luther, the Steelers will have 11 wide receivers on their 90-man offseason roster and one vacant slot remaining.
If Black clears waivers, he will revert to the team’s injured reserve list. Since hamstring injuries are rarely season-ending, it is likely that he will reach an injury settlement with the team that will allow him to return to the NFL with another team.
