Steelers Work Out Three Cornerbacks
The Pittsburgh Steelers worked out wide receiver Shaquan Davis and cornerbacks Kaleb Hayes, Anthony Johnson, and Cameron McCutcheon on Tuesday, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston. Davis was signed to the Steelers practice squad shortly after his workout.
The Steelers now have four wide receivers on the practice squad, as Davis joins Brandon Johnson, Ben Skowronek and Quez Watikins. Davis signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent following the 2023 NFL Draft. After spending his rookie season on the Saints practice squad, he signed a reserve/futures contract with the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason.
His tenure in Philadelphia didn’t last long, however, as he was released on Aug. 7. He returned to the Saints during training camp, but was waived on Aug. 27. Davis played just seven snaps in the preseason with the Saints. He received one target.
Davis recorded 934 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns during his collegiate career at South Carolina State. Davis, who stands at 6-foot-5, 216 pounds, ran a 4.51 40-yard dash at his pro day.
Cornerback Darius Rush is in the concussion protocol, so that could be why the Steelers brought in three cornerbacks for workouts.
Hayes spent time with the Denver Broncos and New York Giants after going undrafted out of BYU in 2023. In his final season at BYU, he played in 12 games (starting 10) while recording 41 tackles (26 solo) with seven pass breakups. His 19 career pass breakups surpassed current Los Angeles Charger Michael Davis for No. 5 at BYU in career pass breakups since 2000.
Johnson signed with the New Orleans Saints after going undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft. In addition to the Saints, the former Louisville and Virginia product spent time with the Green Bay Packers and Atlanta Falcons. He was released as part of Falcons’ final roster cuts on Aug. 27.
Johnson played three years at Louisville and recorded 43 tackles, four for a loss, two interceptions, 13 pass deflections, a fumble recovery, and three forced fumbles. He transferred to Virginia for his last two years. In his final season at Virginia, he recorded 51 total tackles, two interceptions, and 12 passes defended.
Like Hayes and Johnson, McCutcheon also went undrafted in 2023. He was signed by the Los Angeles Rams following the draft. In his final season at Western Carolina, he recorded 32 total tackles including 21 solo stops and 2.5 tackles for loss. He was selected to the third-team preseason All-Southern Conference team by Phil Steele.
