Steelers WR Having Under the Radar Strong Training Camp

Steelers WR Cody White

UNITY TWP., Pa — The Steelers are having an open competition for some of the roster’s bottom wide receiver spots. It seems like the top four are locked in, but one name making a name for himself throughout training camp is Cody White. No, he is not a flashy player, though the toe-tapping grab he made yesterday might let you believe otherwise. But White has been one of the most consistent performers at training camp.

“I’m not trying to be anything that I’m not,” White said. “It’s really about coming out here and being consistent, showing what I can do. So far, I feel like my camp has gone well.”

I talked to White last week when he said that. He sees his maturity from college as a guy who was a body catcher and mostly a contested catch guy, to a guy who has made himself a well-rounded special teamer that can create separation and has a strong hand catch technique.

Really, it has become a game of well-roundedness for White. He doesn’t make the highlight reel plays that George Pickens does. White runs clean routes, makes the catches he should make and does the routine plays routinely. He follows the Tomlinisms around this time of year. So far, that has allowed him to stick on the practice squad and be the first guy elevated each season. He hopes this can be the year he takes the leap up.

“I try to do anything that can get me an edge,” White said. “You know, special teams, I pride myself on that area of the game. It’s an important part of my game.”

White really just wants to get better every day. There’s not much more he can do than that. His competition is still stiff, as Gunner Olszewski, Miles Boykin, and others have shown out in training camp at different points or have clear roles that should allow them to stick in the room. But White has plenty of pluses going his way, and part of it is that he does all the fine details of the position well.
