T.J. Watt Jokes About Viral Pool Slip Video: ‘A Lesser Athlete Would’ve Gotten Hurt’

Steelers OLB T.J. Watt

Last Thursday, Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro outside linebacker T.J. Watt put a scare into Steelers Nation when he posted a video of himself slipping and falling into his pool while reaching for some debris with a net. Watt was thankfully OK, but it was a humorous situation that brought plenty of laughs. Especially from his brother J.J. who said it was the “most T.J. video” he’s ever seen in his entire life. J.J. also responded by posting the popular meme of Jersey Jerry of Barstool Sports saying, “This is a catastrophe.”

Watt addressed the infamous slip that went viral on social media for the first time on Thursday during the Steelers’ third OTAs practice at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.

“I don’t know how I missed the step, but I did,” Watt said with a smile. “A lesser athlete would have gotten hurt.”

Watt was calm about his mishap. He just reacted by tossing his cellphone out of the pool as soon as he fell in. Watt’s dog was also pretty calm as he barely moved when his All-Pro outside linebacker owner took a dive.

“I was very calm,” he said. “I was happy with myself being calm. The dog didn’t react how I wanted to, but that’s because I yelled at him two minutes before that because he was digging in some mud. That’s the background of that story.”

Watt said he got a plethora of texts from teammates and friends after posting his tumble into the pool on social media. All in all, he’s just glad that he didn’t get hurt, as it obviously wouldn’t have been funny then.

“The only reason I posted it was because I wasn’t hurt. It was all in good fun,” Watt said. “I put it in the group chat, and they said it’s too funny not to post.”
