Under the Radar Safety Dominates at Steelers Training Camp

Steelers Safety Kenny Robinson

UNITY TWP., Pa — The Steelers are short on safeties with Minkah Fitzpatrick excused and Damontae Kazee out due to injury. But the team saw someone step up in their place on Sunday. It was none other than former West Virginia star and Pittsburgh native Kenny Robinson who made the plays that caught everyone’s eyes on the field.

Robinson made a number of plays today, including two interceptions and one in seven shots. The first was when he jumped a slant intended for Cody White fro Mason Rudolph. On the second, a deep ball fluttered toward Calvin Austin, but Robinson came down with the interception. One other standout play Robinson made came against Tanner Morgan, who aired out a ball down the sideline to Dan Chisena. But Robinson came over the top and broke it up from his free-safety position.

After the practice, Mike Tomlin unprompted, mentioned Robinson and his value of play, specifically what he brought to the table as a playmaker for the team on a day when they were shorter on safeties for the day.

“I was appreciative of the playmaking from Kenny Robinson today, another guy who had an opportunity to rise up because of the short lines,” Tomlin said.

With Damontae Kazee injured and Minkah Fitzpatrick excused from Steelers training camp, he is one of the guys stepping up to flash his abilities. Mike Tomlin made particular note of him as a playmaker, and anytime you get on the field as a player and catch the attention of the head coach, good things are going to happen.

Robinson played with the Panthers for three seasons before being let go. But the former fifth-round pick is back at home and in a place he knows as well as anyone. Now, he’s hoping more days like this can get him a spot on the squad that he rooted for growing up.
