AT STAKE

The USFL Championship hangs in the balance as the Pittsburgh Maulers, who won the North division and subsequently won the Division finals in a 31-27 thriller over the Michigan Panthers last week, look to capture their first title. The Birmingham Stallions, meanwhile, are looking to repeat as champions after winning the championship 33-30 last year after defeating the Philadelphia Stars.

PREVIEW

The Maulers season has been an odd one to reach this area of the season. They went 4-6, but that was good enough to capture a division title. From there, they won a theatrical game against the Panthers last week that catapulted them to where they are now. Quarterback Troy Williams stood out in that game, as did kicker Chris Blewitt, who ended up sinking multiple key field goals for the team to push the game forward.

The Stallions, well coached and well oiled, will boast a tough task, though. Birmingham has largely played well this season. Under the direction of Skip Holtz, they cruised to a 47-22 victory over the New Orleans Breakers last week to get them here. However, the Maulers are a team that played them tough the last time around. Birmingham won 24-20 back on May 7th, with a go-ahead touchdown giving the Stallions the lead. Led by quarterback Alex McGough, the Stallions rely on him and tight end Jace Sternberger to power a high octane offense that is one of the best in the USFL.
