In 2022, the Steelers missed the playoffs on the final week of the regular season due to losing a tie-breaker to the Miami Dolphins. That was the first time they missed the playoffs since 2019.

Since the expansion of the league and the playoff field in 1970, the Steelers have made the postseason 32 times and missed it just 21. (60.4%).

Of the four teams in the AFC North, the Steelers have the worst odds of making the postseason. The Cincinnati Bengals (-340) and the Baltimore Ravens (-122) are currently favored to make the playoffs, while the Cleveland Browns (+104) are slight underdogs. The Steelers finished 9-8 last season, in third place in the AFC North. The Ravens remain favored to make the postseason despite uncertainty at quarterback, with star Lamar Jackson requesting a trade in March.

In total, eight AFC teams are favored to make the postseason: the Bengals and Ravens, Kansas City Chiefs (-385), Buffalo Bills (-245), Jacksonville Jaguars (-192), New York Jets (-162), Miami Dolphins (-105) and Los Angeles Chargers (-102).
