The Steelers released guard David DeCastro with a non-football-injury designation, according to the NFL transactions page for Thursday.

A non-football injury means that DeCastro was dealing with an injury that was not suffered during a team practice or game.

DeCastro, who was released by the team after 10 years in the starting lineup on Thursday, did not participate in the team’s three-day mandatory minicamp last week.

Head coach Mike Tomlin said that the team had no significant injury issues during minicamp and that all absences had been excused by him. Tomlin called the issues that kept players out “day-to-day in nature.”

NFL Network reported on Thursday that DeCastro has been dealing with an ankle issue that required surgery and is evaluating whether he wants to continue to play. DeCastro also missed two games and significant preseason time last year with a knee injury.
