Steelers Daily: Busy Cut-Down Day; Preseason TV Ratings Soar

The Steelers got down to 53 platers on Tuesday, while making two trades in the process, the ratings for Sunday’s preseason game are off the charts and the team is rounding into health ahead of the opener.

🏈 The Steelers full 53-man roster was released just after 4 p.m. Returners Joe Haeg, Marcus Allen, Justin Layne, Anthony McFarland, Buddy Johnson, Carlos Davis, Henry Mondeaux and John Leglue were among the cuts.

🏈 The Steelers traded for Denver Broncos outside linebacker Malik Reed and Minnesota Vikings offensive lineman Jesse Davis.

🏈 Steelers Injury Updates: Montravius Adams, Joe Haeg and Alex Highsmith all returned to practice on Tuesday.

🏈 Steelers Former Steelers quarterback Chris Oladokun visited with the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday, according to Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network. Oladokun was drafted by the Steelers in the seventh round this past spring but was released by the team on Aug. 23.

🏈 Steelers Field Yates of ESPN reported that the Steelers hosted free agent tight end Dalton Keene. Keene was a third-round pick by the New England Patriots in 2020. Keene, who was waived by the Patriots on Aug. 21, has three receptions for 16 yards in his career.

🏈 Steelers The New Orleans Saints released two former Steelers — outside linebacker Taco Charlton and inside linebacker Jon Bostic.

🏈 The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released former Steelers outside linebacker Genard Avery. Avery was released by Pittsburgh on Aug. 23 after signing with the team in March.

🏈 Former Steelers safety Morgan Burnett announced on Tuesday that he’s retiring and will sign a one-day contract with the Green Bay Packers to make it official. Burnett played eight seasons with the Packers. Burnett’s only season with the Steelers was in 2018.

🏈 Steelers CBS Sports revealed that the Steelers-Lions game on Sunday was the most-watched preseason game on the network since 2013. Sunday’s game averaged 5.821 million viewers, up +65% from last year. Viewership peaked at 7.597 million views, making it the most-watched NFL preseason game on any network this year. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk pointed out that the preseason game on Sunday afternoon did better than each of the five NBA games from Christmas 2021.

🏈 Steelers Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield is looking for revenge on the Cleveland Browns in Week 1. Mayfield reportedly told Buffalo Bills preseason sideline reporter Cynthia Frelund, “I’m going to f**k them up.”

🏈 Steelers Former NFL general manager Mike Lombardi said on the Pat McAfee Show that the offense the Steelers are running is perfect for Mitch Trubisky and believes he should be the Week 1 starter in Cincinnati.
