Steelers Urged to Trade for Bears QB Justin Fields

Steelers QB Justin Fields

The Steelers will likely go quarterback shopping this offseason. That does not mean the team will necessarily go out and grab a starter, but they certainly could look at a mid-round draft pick or free-agent backup. But one name that continues to get connected to the team is Bears quarterback Justin Fields.

The latest person who thinks is Robert Mays. Mays, the host of the Athletic Football Show and former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel, broke down the potential landing spots for the highly talented quarterback, and the Steelers were a team that came up as a wild card possibility.

“If the Steelers decide, ‘Hey, we did the Kenny Pickett thing, even if we didn’t put him in the best position, we still think this isn’t our best path forward,’ are they a team that could look to take a big swing and try to go get somebody like this?” Mays said on The Athletic Football Show

Mays even put it out there that the team could look at former Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman to pair with Fields. The Steelers are struggling offensively. At some point, the quarterback has to make a play to spark them. But Kenny Pickett is so inconsistent that it’s tough to rely upon. Then, there is the worrying health history growing with him, too. The Steelers will be at a crossroads this offseason with their quarterback. But they’ll need some insurance.

Fields is an entirely different player, too. But he has some similarities to Pickett that will make the Steelers second guess. He is also a bit skittish in the pocket and struggles to win from it. That’s something Pickett has struggled with, too, and the Steelers might want a point guard type of player if they want some insurance. But Fields has the arm talent and dynamic ability on the ground that few players have in the NFL. That makes him a volatile but high-upside option if they wanted to go that route.
