Steelers WR to Serve as Penn State Honorary Captain

Penn State football’s season opener this Saturday night will mark a special homecoming for Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Allen Robinson.

The former Penn State received will serve as an honorary captain for prior to the primetime matchup against West Virginia. Robinson showed some excitement on his X account Wednesday evening.

Robinson spent three years as a wide receiver at Penn State from 2011-2013. He appeared in 12 games as a freshman, catching three passes in head coach Joe Paterno’s final season at the helm.

Heading into his sophomore season in 2012, Robinson jumped to No. 1 on the depth chart after the departure Penn State’s top three receivers. Robinson started all 12 games, recording 77 receptions for 1,018 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Robinson increased his production as a junior, compiling 97 catches for 1,432 yards, becoming the first wide receiver to lead the Big Ten in receptions and yardage since 1985. He won the Richter–Howard Receiver of the Year award for the second consecutive season, and was named an All-American by The Sporting News while Phil Steele named Robinson to his second-team All-America squad.

Robinson finished his collegiate career with the second-most receptions, third-most receiving yards and fifth-most receiving touchdowns in school history.

After forgoing his senior season, Robinson went in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

He spent three years apiece with the Jaguars (2014-17) and Chicago Bears (2018-21) before playing the 2022 season with the Los Angeles Rams. Robinson was then traded to the Steelers this off-season.

Former Penn State defensive coordinator and interim coach Tom Bradley will be performing the pregame coin toss for Penn State’s opener against West Virginia. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 on NBC.

Robinson is one of three Penn State alumni on the Steelers roster, along with tight end Pat Freiermuth and cornerback Joey Porter Jr.
